Self-advocacy is something that you can do to achieve a specific goal or outcome for yourself. It is a problem-solving strategy.
Self-advocacy is also about empowerment, recovery, and standing up for yourself.
When you are advocating for yourself, begin by defining the problem. Then gather information until you have access to all of the facts.
Once the problem and the facts are clear, develop an action plan. Carry out the plan and assess the results.
An important part of advocacy is knowing your rights. Consult UVic's policies to learn more.
Self-advocacy can involve seeking out supportive networks. The SSD can assist students by advocating for them or by assisting them as they advocate for themselves. We are here to support you. Please drop by our office if we can help!
